BMW has decided to replace its much-praised Z3 roadster with an all-new model and differentiated it from the 3 Series by calling it Z4.

The new Z4 will continue to be built at BMW's facility in upstate South Carolina and will be presented to the public at the Paris Motor Show in September 2002.

More details will be available at that time, but you can tell that the new Z4 will look more powerful and sporting in its styling, with looks more reminiscent of the Z8.

BMW assures us it will keep classic roadster features like a long and sleek engine compartment, a long wheelbase with short body-overhangs, and a low-in-the-tub seating position.

The company will also endow the car with traditional roadster characteristics like high-torque engines, superior handling and comfortable ride.

Power will be delivered by a choice of two classic BMW in-line 6-cylinder engines -- the 184-horsepower 2.5-litre or the 225-hp 3.0. The cars will be differentiated as the Z4 2.5i and Z4 3.0i, respectively. Power will be delivered to the rear wheels by a standard 5-speed manual or optional 5-speed Steptronic (sequential shifts) automatic. The Z4 3.0i will be available with a choice of 6-speed manual or 5-speed STEPTRONIC automatic. In the spring of 2003, a Sequential Manual Gearbox (SMG) will be available in both models.

The Z4's suspension is a modified version of the highly acclaimed suspension from the 3 Series. Dynamic Drive Control (DDC), available as an option, provides even more spontaneous acceleration and power at the touch of the gas pedal, quicker steering, as well as an even more aggressive shifting program for the 5-speed automatic.

A wide track, extremely low centre of gravity, optimum 50:50 weight distribution and electric power steering combine to give the new Z4 outstanding agility. Fade-free high-performance brakes, standard Run-Flat tires and Dynamic Stability Control (DSC), with an on-demand traction mode, contribute to outstanding safety in all driving situations.

Also of note is a larger than expected luggage compartment (reportedly 9.1 cubic feet) and a double hinged soft roof with rear glass window that stows under a hard, integrated tonneau cover. An optional fully automatic top can be raised or lowered in about 10 seconds.

Standard features include a leather sports steering wheel, sport seats, a rollover safety system, and remote entry. Options include a DVD-based navigation system with retractable screen, a premium sound system and an integrated hands-free phone.

North American sales start in October 2002 with European sales set for the spring of 2003.
