Car buffs looking to get their hands on Pontiac's hottest wheels in years will have to cool their heels.

Demand for the new Solstice convertible is so strong that buyers who walk into a showroom today may face a five-month wait for the head-turning roadster.

The first customer to get a Solstice from City Buick Pontiac was offered $10,000 more than he paid for the car by a stranger the first day he owned the car, according to the dealership's general manager Mike Carmichael.

"There's huge interest in the Solstice," said Carmichael. "I just wish I had 20 in stock. People call us and want to see one, but the minute the cars arrive, they're gone."

City Buick currently has 20 orders for the Solstice, but Carmichael figures he'll be lucky if he gets eight cars by the end of the year because of a supply crunch.

As of yesterday, there were seven Solstices up for grabs on eBay.ca. Some had more than a dozen bids, even though all the cars being sold are located in the U.S.

The first 1,000 Solstices sold south of the border were snapped up in a mere 41 minutes when U.S. dealers started taking orders in April.

Since then, U.S. buyers have placed 15,000 orders for the 2006 Solstice, which is currently projected to have a production run of about 17,000 cars.

Earlier this week, GM announced it is adding a third shift to the plant that builds the Solstice, starting Jan. 9, 2006, to boost production.

When the vehicle was launched earlier this year, the gorgeous styling lines were complemented by an equally attractive bottom line: A Canadian base price of $25,695.

That sparked what may be the biggest roadster-buying frenzy since the launch of the Mazda Miata more than a decade ago.

"Pontiac is going through a product renaissance and this is the halo product," said Carmichael.

Solstice standard features include 18-inch wheels and a 177-horsepower engine.

Current models only come with a manual transmission. An automatic version will be produced next year.
