History
The LS series was one of the first offerings by Lexus, the premium division launched by Toyota in 1990. This full-size four-door sedan was designed to provide competition for, and an alternative to, top-of-the-line rides from Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Jaguar, as well as Nissan’s upscale Infiniti brand and domestic mainstays Lincoln and Cadillac.
The LS 400 was updated in 1995 and again in 2001 when it was fitted with a 278-horsepower 4.3-litre V8 and given the LS 430 name. A six-speed automatic transmission replaced the previous five-speed unit in 2004 at which time the engine was boosted to 290 horsepower and new front and rear styling was implemented.
A redesigned and more powerful LS 460 took over as the Lexus flagship for 2007.

The good stuff
A true luxury-class upstart, the LS was famous for its sumptuous passenger accommodations. Its interior, coated in leather and genuine walnut trim, was one of the roomiest and most comfortable in its class, with lots of rear-seat space that encouraged leg stretching. Available trunk space was more than adequate for any journey or task. On the road, the car was whisper-quiet with engine, road and wind noise barely audible at any speed. The car’s suspension delivered a smooth and supple ride. The 4.3-litre V8, while not the most powerful in its class, moved the 4,000-pound LS with authority. Fit and finish, usually a Lexus strong point, was exemplary for the class.

Heads up!
The LS 430 had few faults other than its less-than-dramatic wrapper: this is a very inconspicuous car, which, for those with the means, might be a turn off. Although the usually friendly and efficient level of service at Lexus dealerships has become almost as famous as the brand itself, the cost of repairing or replacing even the most minor of warranty-expired components can be expensive. Although the car is generally reliable, extended warranty, if available, is a consideration if long-term ownership is your goal. Compared with Mercedes-Benz, Audi and BMW, the LS 430 lacks the same degree of suspension firmness, although models with the Euro tuning option help somewhat in this area. Later versions with the six-speed automatic transmission returned better fuel economy and felt stronger.

Overall
In some sense, the beauty of owning an LS is that few people will know its exact age, since styling changes over the years have been so subtle. This is a high-quality, technically advanced automobile that definitely deserves to be at the top of your luxury-ride shopping list.

Prices at a glance
Used LS 430 values are reasonable considering the car’s $80,000-$90,000 price range when new. Cars equipped with the Premium package could cost a bit more, all things (equipment and kilometre usage) being equal. The low end of a given price range represents higher-mileage, low-option vehicles.
