History
The second-generation Kia Spectra sedan replaced the first-gen four-door hatchback that arrived for the 2001 model year. The sedan version was closely followed by a four-door wagon, called the Spectra5. Both used a 138-horsepower four-cylinder engine that was originally developed by Kia’s parent, Hyundai, which used the engine for the Elantra. Transmission choices consisted of a five-speed manual or optional four-speed automatic.
Following five years of relatively robust sales, the Spectra gave way to the Forte sedan and Forte Koup coupe for the 2010 model year.

The good stuff
Kia’s economy-skewed sedan and wagon definitely helped put the Korea-based automaker on the map as a builder of quality vehicles. Both models featured class-leading interior space along with a considerable amount of standard features.
The well-insulated cabin also kept engine and road noise to a minimum. The sedan’s ride quality was also good, but somewhat firmer on the Spectra5 with its standard sport-tuned suspension.
The four-cylinder powerplant provided sufficient thrust and the standard five-speed gearbox and shifter were a significant improvement over the previous edition. Construction quality on the Spectra rivalled any of its peers.

Heads up!
Cars fitted with the optional four-speed automatic transmission felt more sluggish than their manually shifted counterparts, especially when travelling uphill and/or when fully loaded. Regardless of transmission choice, the Spectra was noticeably thirstier than its sales-leading Toyota-Corolla and Honda-Civic counterparts.
Cornering prowess was also not a sedan strong point (a lack of steering precision and too much body lean were common complaints). However, the more stiffly sprung Spectra5 provided more control. Luggage space was at least adequate, although a smallish trunk opening limited the dimensions of bulky objects that could be stuffed inside.

Overall
A used Spectra has plenty of competition in the small-car class, but with a lot of basic goodness on its side and five-year bumper-to-bumper protection in case something goes wrong, this feisty little number is a worthy contender to fill your second-hand transportation needs. The Hyundai Elantra from the same era is about the same size and uses similar running gear, so it could also be included in your search.

Prices at a glance
The Spectra’s bargain-basement original list prices translate into affordable pre-owned values. Note that the more sought-after Spectra5 will likely command a slight, but-well-worth-it premium. The low end of a given price range represents higher-use, low-option vehicles.
