History
The F-series has been a bestseller beginning with its introduction way back in 1948. Since then, the popular pickup has undergone considerable changes and added specialty editions such as the King Ranch and Harley-Davidson, as well as the high-performance SVT Lightning that was offered from 2000-’03. When it comes to the F-150, there is no shortage of versatility. Ford redesigned and enlarged its mainstay pickup for the 2004 model year, making it bigger and beefier than its General Motors and Dodge (Ram) competitors. The F-150 offered a very basic base V6 plus 4.6- and 5.4-litre V8s, the latter producing 300 horsepower and 365 pound-feet of torque. A new F-Series line arrived for the 2009 model year.

The Good Stuff
The F-Series’ boxy styling was a departure from the previous rounded look and quickly found favour with buyers. As well, the significantly deeper cargo boxes (three different sizes to choose from, depending on cab selection) meant plenty of extra space. Ford also upgraded both hauling and towing capacities with stouter and more rigid chassis. Ride quality was similarly improved and engine and road nose all but banished from the cabin, thanks to insulation and other design improvements. Also updated were the standard and optional seats that were more supportive than those found in previous models. The Lariat, King Ranch and Harley Davidson trim levels provided the ultimate in well-appointed interiors as well as a touch of attitude.

Heads Up!
The V6-equipped models (available only in rear-wheeldrive and the only way to get a five-speed manual gearbox) were good for light hauling or as basic work trucks for lugging tools but otherwise languishing at the job site. The base 4.6-litre V8 was better suited for most tasks and achieved about the same fuel economy as the V6. The 5.4-litre V8 was the best for tackling heavy lifting and towing chores, but it was no gas miser and fell short of offerings from General Motors. The extended SuperCab could transport more than three passengers, but adult space in back was limited and not especially comfortable. A better choice would be the larger SuperCrew, but you’ll have to settle for a shorter box. With high box sides, the cargo area of 4x4 models was especially difficult to access, often requiring a step.

Overall
There are more powerful and economical pickups on the market, but the F-150 is still considered one of the best at providing excellent hauling capacity, capable handling and spacious, comfortable cabs. And with millions on the road, parts and service should never be a problem.

Prices at a Glance
High-kilometre pickups can be expensive money pits. Overall condition, rather than selecting a specific model year, should prevail. You’ll pay extra for 4x4 and crew-cab models, or for King Ranch, Harley Davidson units.
