History
The Ford Escape, along with its near relation Mazda Tribute (Ford owned a good chunk of the Japanese automaker at the time) were launched for the 2001 model year and joined a growing class of smaller sport utility vehicles. Along with its diminutive dimensions, the Escape operated with reasonably fuel-efficient engines, including a 127-horsepower 2.0-litre four-cylinder and an optional 201- horsepower 3.0-litre V6. The 2005 model year was met with revised interior/exterior styling along with the Escape Hybrid that merged a 133-horse four-cylinder with an electric motor for 155 net horsepower. Elsewhere, a 153-horsepower 2.3-litre I4 took over as the base engine. The Escape was redesigned for the 2008 model year, although the powerteams basically carried over.

The good stuff
The Escape’s attributes were highlighted by a roomy five-passenger interior plus cargo room that equalled or exceeded that of many of its rivals. Ride, handling and braking qualities were also considered above average. Ford’s littlest sport ute also proved that a simple, yet attractive and efficient design went a long way toward winning over buyers. The interior featured an easy-to-grasp control panel plus a spacious floor console that was large enough to stow a small purse. Both front- and all-wheel-drive models offered decent ground clearance, which allowed the Escape to actually go off road so long as the terrain wasn’t terribly inhospitable.

Heads up!
Early (2001-’04) four-cylinder models fitted with the optional four-speed automatic transmission were easy on gas, but were also rather sluggish. The I4 available in 2005-’07 Escapes was a far better base-engine pick, although neither were a match for the V6. The five-speed manual transmission was only available with the four-cylinder. Note that the 2005 and up models featured significant interior improvements. Wind noise was an issue while lowering the rear seat for added cargo room required the headrests to be removed. Remember that the 2001-’07 Escape is considered an entry-level sport ute, so you can expect the vehicle to be a touch raw and utilitarian.

Overall
The 2001-’07 Escape is a straightforward, affordable sport ute that became a best-seller for Ford as well as its relations that sold the vehicle under other labels. The vehicle is considered as durable and fuel-efficient as its peers and its looks are above reproach. In other words, anyone planning to take the Escape route shouldn’t be disappointed.

Prices at a glance
Escapes are plentiful and competitively priced. Fullyloaded Limited versions will be at the high end of the scale while in-demand Hybrid models will likely sell for up to $3,000 more than comparable gas-only models.
