Built the old way

History
Aura was the first of a new wave of European engineered Saturns built with metal body panels, instead of the polymer panels on a steel space frame used by previous company nameplates, and was a replacement for the Saturn L-Series. Like the current generation Chevrolet Malibu it was based on the Opel Vectra midsize sedan from GM’s German division. The production Aura was revealed at the 2006 New York International Auto Show and was built in the U.S. on GM’s global Epsilon platform for model years 2007-09. Aura was discontinued when the Saturn brand was abandoned at the end of 2009 as a result of GM’s restructuring. The second generation Aura, which was to be based on the Vectra’s replacement in Germany, was eventually marketed as the new 2011 Buick Regal.

The good stuff
The public fell in love with Aura from the first time it appeared as a concept car at the 2005 North American International Auto Show in Detroit. Owners praised the sleek sedan with the European flair for its handling, style and quiet ride. Automotive journalists liked it too and Aura won numerous awards in 2007 including North American Car of the Year. Aura earned top marks in crash testing from both the U.S.’ National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). Aura was well built and Websites that track such data report fewer problems than normal for all years.

Heads up!
Praise for Aura’s design and driving dynamics was tempered somewhat by owners who complained of cheap materials used in the interior, especially in base models. Because they are orphans, Saturns now must be serviced at Chevrolet, Buick, GMC or Cadillac dealers, although some customers have reported difficulties in getting warranty work done on their cars. Servicing should be easiest at Chevrolet dealerships, because mechanically the Chevy Malibu is virtually identical. For more info you can log on to www.saturn.ca. In 2009 31,458 vehicles were recalled for a potentially faulty shift cable clip, so the gear selected may not be the gear showing on the shift indicator.

Overall
Aura was available in three trim lines. The base XE had 17-inch wheels and was powered by a 3.5L V6 coupled to a 4-speed automatic (2007-08) or a 2.4L I4 (2009). The luxurious XR rode on 18-inch wheels and had a 3.6L V6 first used by Cadillac CTS mated to a 6-speed automatic. A hybrid gasoline/electric Green Line version was sold in all three model years. About 160,000 Auras were sold in North America, so finding one should not be a problem.

Prices at a glance

Because they are orphans, Auras should sell at lower prices than comparable cars from both North America and Japan.
