"The Solstice is drop dead gorgeous"

History
The original Solstice concept was such a huge hit at the 2002 North American International Auto Show in Detroit that General Motors announced a production version would be for sale early in 2005. In retrospect, the fact that production was delayed until later that year (as a 2006 model) was not a good omen. The rarest Solstice is the 2009 hardtop coupe, of which only 1,266 were built before GM pulled the plug on its Pontiac division. About 70,000 roadsters were assembled, all in Wilmington, Del.

The good stuff
The Solstice is drop dead gorgeous - whether the soft top is up or down - and still turns heads wherever it goes. Handling is excellent and it’s especially fun to drive topless. The base 2.4-litre engine offers good performance (0-100 km/h in about 7.5 seconds), but it’s noisy. The 2.0-litre turbocharged engine, which powered GXP versions, was the first gasoline direct injection engine from an American manufacturer and posts 0-100 times in the 5.5-second range. Many owners report few problems and total satisfaction with their cars; others not so much, particularly with early models.

Heads up!
Where to begin? In 2007, Consumer Reports rated Solstice as the most trouble-prone new car sold in North America. Online Solstice owner forums report the same litany of problems: failing rear differentials; door handles that come off in your hand; cupholders that break too easily; leaky tops; squeaks and rattles. Early in 2008 all Solstices were recalled to fix leaky differential pinion seals. Perhaps a higher mileage car might be the wisest purchase, since that could indicate it’s been driven regularly without serious problems. Do your due diligence before buying. Many owners reported trouble getting satisfactory repairs when the cars were new. Now that there are no Pontiac dealerships, this may be even more problematic.

Overall
Remember the old saying, “Be careful what you ask for, you just might get it?” It certainly applies to this car. Everyone loved the concept’s looks so much that Pontiac engineers compromised much in the name of beauty. Nowhere is that more evident than in the unwieldy convertible top that leaves a scant 0.04 cubic metres for storage when it’s lowered into what should be trunk space. There are virtually no storage spaces inside the cockpit, making even overnight voyages a challenge. Perhaps best as a car to be bought and driven occasionally, waiting for the day it will become a classic - a day that surely will come because of looks alone.
