Loyal to the art deco design concept

History
The production Crossfire was faithful to the art deco design concept first show in 2001. It dates from the time of the “merger” between Daimler-Benz and Chrysler Corp. In effect, it is a Mercedes in everything but name - and price - sharing about 80% of its parts with other M-B models, most notably the SLK320 (engine and transmission, seats, platform, dash, instruments). Available only as a coupe in 2004, a roadster was added in 2005. The cars were assembled for Chrysler by Karmann at its factory in Osnabruck, Germany. The last Crossfire rolled off the assembly line in December 2007.

The good stuff
The base 18-valve, SOHC V6 engine, available from 2004-2008, was powerful enough to post a 0-100 km/h time in the 6.5 second range, but the turbocharged AMG version, available only in 2005-06, improved that to well under 5.0 seconds. There were no recalls ordered to repair defective parts during the Crossfire’s five-year run. The convertible never was tested, but the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gave the coupe five stars for driver protection in front and side crashes; for the passenger, it was four stars for front impact and five stars side impact.

Heads up!
Crossfire started off strong with 35,700 built for model year 2004. But sales lagged and production fell off quickly - to just 12,500 in 2005 and only 2,000 in 2007. So, newer examples will be hard to find. If buying a 2004-05 model, a “check engine” light may indicate a leak from the transmission solenoid/pressure switch. Overall, problems have been minimal other than replacement of the steering damper on some early models. Convertible top problems caused by driver error have been reported. Because it uses many Mercedes components, the cost of replacement parts may be higher than average. With the base engine and automatic, fuel consumption was rated at 11.2 L/100km city and 7.8 highway. With the AMG engine, those numbers rose to 13.7 and 9.0.

Overall
One would think that a drop dead gorgeous sports car with Mercedes-Benz mechanicals, on an M-B chassis, would be an instant classic. But despite its attractive pricing - both new and used - plus decent performance and reliability, it always has been a tough sell. Crossfire was a good deal when new - about two-thirds the price of its SLK sibling - and is even a better deal now. It’s not hard to find examples at the lower end of our pricing scale. Buy now, before everyone else discovers that this is one of the great used car deals, and one to keep for the ages.
