Real bargains on used car lots

History
Launched at the New York Auto Show in 2006, the fourth generation Hyundai Elantra sedan lasted for model years 2007-2010. It was marketed as a compact but classified as a midsize car by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency because of its segment-leading interior space. Even the base Elantra L came with power locks and windows, but A/C was an extra. A five-speed manual was standard and a four-speed automatic optional. At the upper end, Elantra GLS and Limited got the automatic, A/C, cruise, 16-inch wheels and disc brakes with ABS.

The good stuff
Although the 2007-10 sedans have a reliability record that is much better than average, according to publications such as Consumer Reports, they nonetheless have depreciated faster than their Japanese competition. This isn’t a bad thing because it makes them real bargains on used car lots across the country. The ride is smooth and the cabin is spacious, with a back seat that won’t squish two adults. Drivetrain tweaks gave 2010 models slightly improved fuel economy. The automatic was rated by Transport Canada at 7.8 L/100km city and 5.8 on the highway, while the five-speed stick was rated 8.1 and 5.7, respectively.

Heads up!
When it comes to repairs, no news is good news. Unlike some cars, very few complaints from Elantra owners will surface on a search of the Internet. Can you live with an engine that’s a little noisy at high rpm? Most owners will gladly trade that for the sedan’s stellar repair record. In 2009, some 2007 models were recalled to fix a faulty stop lamp switch. As well, 2008-09 models were recalled because of possible fuel pump failure. The 8,451 units in question were replaced. Side and head curtain airbags were not standard on cars destined for Canada, but extra-cost options. Base models had disc/drum brakes.

Overall
Hyundai’s excellent warranties - 5-years/100,000 km comprehensive and 7 years/120,000 km power train - means that many 2007-10 Elantras will still have some coverage. A completely new Elantra sedan was introduced for model year 2011, featuring Hyundai’s “fluidic sculpture” styling. Although the redesign makes the previous generation’s cars look a little dowdy by comparison, it shouldn’t detract from their value as inexpensive and dependable transportation.
