Holding to its name

History
The Chevrolet TrailBlazer - surely one of the best names ever for a sport utility vehicle - was introduced in 2002 and promptly voted North American Truck of the Year. It was available with rear-wheel drive or part-time four-wheel drive with high and low ranges. The base engine was an inline-six with a V8 optional; both were mated to four-speed automatics. Two trim levels - LS and LT - were offered, although an SS model with a bigger 6.0-litre V8 and beefier four-speed automatic was marketed from 2006-09. An EXT extended version with seven-passenger seating was built until 2006. Trailblazer was replaced by the Traverse in model year 2009.

The good stuff
The base DOHC 4.2-litre inline six was named one of Ward’s 10 best engines from 2002-05 and, while thirsty, its 291 hp can deliver V8-like towing ability. If all the little things that could go wrong - taillights, ignition switch, fuel tank sending unit - were fixed under warranty, a used Trailblazer can make sense because of its sturdy drivetrain. Models from 2007 on seem to have had fewer problems because by then GM had things sorted out. For the most part, repair costs will be low. It has a spacious interior and delivers a smooth ride, although handling is compromised by its body-on-frame design.

Heads up!
In safety tests, Trailblazer is proof of the old adage that bigger doesn’t always mean better. Crash testing by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in the U.S. gave the truck three (out of five) stars for driver protection in frontal crashes and four stars for front passenger protection. It did better in side impact tests, scoring five stars, but the 2WD model got just three stars in rollover tests, and the 4WD model got four, mostly because side curtain airbags did not become standard until 2008. There were 15 Transport Canada recalls, 13 of them for electrical problems with 2002-03 models. In 2006, Consumer Reports cited the six-cylinder Trailblazer for having the worst fuel economy among midsize SUVs.

Overall
More than 1.5 million Trailblazers were built, so there are lots from which to choose in all price ranges. Models with 4WD will be more expensive and SS versions are the priciest of all. Because of their poor fuel economy, with either V8s or inline sixes, Trailblazers are expensive daily drivers. But as a lightly used second car or occasional tow vehicle they can make sense. Buy from a reputable dealer - one who may offer a warranty - and be sure to look at the service records.
