Major facelift for Tribeca

History
It’s not often that an automaker gives a brand new vehicle a major facelift after just two model years, but that’s what Subaru did with the B9 Tribeca. When introduced in 2005 as a 2006 model, the midsize crossover sported a new front end treatment designed to reflect parent Fuji Heavy Industries’ history as an aircraft manufacturer (including the famous “Kate” torpedo bomber in World War II). It was going to be Subaru’s signature look on all future vehicles, but quickly became too controversial and was abandoned. The original chrome grille was blacked out in 2007, but this didn’t appease critics and completely new front end styling was introduced in 2008, when it also got a larger 3.6-litre engine. First year Tribecas came in five- and seven-passenger versions in both base and Limited trim. To get the seven-passenger version in 2007 you had to order the top-of-the-line Limited with navigation and DVD entertainment systems.

The good stuff
Pleasant to drive, with a spacious cabin, Tribeca features Subaru’s proven symmetrical all-wheel drive and is powered by the company’s 3.0-litre "boxer" engine - a horizontally opposed flat six. Not everyone liked the futuristic cabin, especially the dash with its electroluminescent gauges, but it was chosen best interior by Ward’s Automotive. Tribeca earned a "top pick" safety rating after crash testing by the U.S.’ Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS). All Tribecas have a sunroof, six airbags, plus ABS and anti-skid technology. Five-passenger versions offer exceptional cargo room. Owners report minimal problems in all areas and consumer groups consider Tribeca’s reliability to be better than average.

Heads up!
An online search for Tribeca problems will come up with a very short list. But if you buy one, be prepared for abuse from those who delight in making fun of others. Tribeca’s original front end styling was controversial right from the beginning, although it never bothered me and I always give an automaker full marks for daring to be different. But being different allows some people the freedom to go over the top. Tribeca has gone from being an "ugly duckling" to worse as critics fall all over each other to heap scorn on its nose. One Internet writer even has called it "the automotive equivalent of Jabba the Hut." Another objected to the front end that celebrated the company’s history as an aircraft manufacturer because its planes were among those that attacked Pearl Harbor in 1941.

Overall
When new, 2006 models ranged in price from $41,995 to $52,495. An average price six years later is $15,995, making Tribeca an excellent value among midsize AWD crossovers. Combined fuel economy will be in the range of 12 to 13 L/100km. This is Subaru’s largest, most expensive vehicle and you sit higher than in Outback or Forester. Despite a heavy duty suspension and 8.3 inches of ground clearance, it is not suited for heavy duty off-road use. Tribeca is based on the Legacy platform and built in Lafayette, Indiana.
