HISTORY

The seventh generation Audi A4, known internally as the B7 version, made its debut halfway into 2005 with revised exterior styling - especially a big new grille - and a couple new engines and transmissions. They were available either in front-wheel drive or with Audi’s proven Quattro all-wheel-drive system. Standard tranny was a six-speed manual with a six-speed automatic as an option and a seven-speed multitronic CVT available on four-cylinder FWD cars. The A4 was a throwback to the days when automakers offered a full line of cars because it came as a four-door sedan, four-door wagon (Avant in Audi-speak) and, in 2007-08, as a two-door cabriolet. It also was available with either gasoline or diesel engines.

THE GOOD STUFF

A4s of this vintage are a nice compact size, with a 2,648 mm wheelbase, and they handle extremely well, especially with Quattro. When the new generation came out for model year 2009, the wheelbase had grown to 2,808 mm and these newer cars just don’t feel as nimble. All 2005-08 A4s are fun to drive, and relatively quick, although there is a bit of turbo lag when you hammer the throttle on the 2.0T. With Quattro, the 3.2-litre V6 is capable of 0-100 km/h times in the 6.5 second range. Standard equipment included traction control, a Bosch electronic stability program and anti-lock brakes with brake assist and electronic brake-force distribution. The International Institute for Highway (IIHS) safety crash tested a 2007 A4 sedan and as a result made it a “Top Safety Pick.” There have been no recalls for this generation A4.

HEADS UP!

Consumer sites give the A4 better-than-average ratings for reliability, with electrical problems being the main area of concern. Some owners complain that the CVT is jerky and lacks torque. As good as Quattro is, these are not meant to be off-road vehicles. Both four-cylinder and six-cylinder engines require premium fuel.

OVERALL

Called "compact executive cars," A4s are the size equivalent of BMW’s 3 Series, but used car values generally are lower. Shop around, because prices seem to vary widely, especially for cars with few km showing on the odometer. All Audis are products of Volkswagen AG and the A4s were assembled on VW Group’s B7 platform in Ingolstadt, Germany. Some low mileage 2008 models still may have factory warranty remaining. Avants with Quattro have always been big in ski country because they’ll go through just about anything and hold a lot of gear. Sportier S4 versions were available with a 4.2-litre V8.
