Interior space is surprisingly good for a subcompact

HISTORY

Toyota Yaris is one of those global cars built in many markets under many different names. In North America, Yaris is a continuation of the Echo (2003-05). In Japan, it’s known as the Vitz. Originally it was available only as a three- or five-door hatchback, with a sedan (based on a car called Belta in Japan) added to the Yaris line-up for Canada and the U.S. for the 2007 model year. Yaris continued Echo’s controversial instrument layout with the gauges clustered in the centre of the dash rather than in front of the driver. Some people find it off-putting, but it will be second nature after a few hundred km. This placement made it more cost effective to build cars for left-hand drive markets like North America and right-hand drive markets like Japan and the UK, because the gauges didn’t have to be repositioned.

THE GOOD STUFF

I think Yaris models are cute and friendly, especially the three-door hatchback. Interior space is surprisingly good for a subcompact and exterior dimensions make them easy to park. Yaris is an ideal city car, with a wheelbase of just 2,460 mm, yet it has no problem keeping up with superhighway traffic. Since its introduction in 2006, Yaris has been rated the most fuel efficient subcompact by Natural Resources Canada. Expect fuel economy in the range of 6.3-7.0 litres per 100 km in combined highway/city driving with the five-speed stick.

HEADS UP!

Not much to report on reliability issues. A thorough search of online sites and forums finds very few complaints from satisfied Yaris owners. Worldwide, 1.28 million cars were recalled by Toyota in 2009 to correct a possible seat belt defect that, in severe front-end collisions, could cause a foam pad to ignite. ABS was not standard on all trim levels. The International Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) rates 2007-11 Yaris models “good” in frontal offset collisions and “good” for side impact crashes. In side impact tests, 2007-08 models, which lacked optional side airbags, received a “poor” rating.

OVERALL

These are reliable and efficient little cars that are nimble in traffic, although there is noticeable body roll in high-speed cornering. With a good set of winter tires they will handle all kinds of weather and road conditions. Finding a used Yaris should be easy - especially one of the hatchback models, which are the most popular in Canada. There are lots of listings from which to choose, especially from model year 2007. Trim levels are CE, LE and RS. A new third-generation Yaris went on sale in late 2011 as a 2012 model and Toyota dealers are offering remaining 2011 stock with cash incentives of $2,000-$2,500.
