Praised for their European road manners

HISTORY

The sixth generation Volkswagen Passat (designated B6) was produced from 2006-10 and was the sixth generation of VW’s large family car, first introduced in Europe in 1973. With this bigger, more powerful Passat, VW decided to go upscale with premium interiors and amenities. Although base prices were under $30,000, a maxed out model with leather, real wood accents, V6, automatic and 4Motion (VW’s AWD system) topped $50,000. Buyers could choose from a four-door sedan or wagon and in 2008 VW launched the Passat CC (for Comfort Coupe), a stylish four-door with coupe-like styling.

THE GOOD STUFF

Passats have always been praised for their European road manners, and the sixth generation cars carried on that tradition. Whether you find the suspension too firm, or not firm enough, is entirely a personal preference. Most reviews when these cars were new liked their ride, steering and handling. VW’s 4Motion was based on Audi’s proven Quattro AWD system but was available only with V6 and automatic transmission. Basic warranties were 4 years/80,000 km basic and 5 years/100,000 km powertrain, so newer B6 models still may have some factory coverage remaining.

HEADS UP!

Although Passat was equipped with many standard safety features, the 2006-10 models received only four out of five stars from the National Highway Traffic Safety Agency (NHTSA) for front impact and rollover protection, but got five stars in side impact testing. A 2.0-litre TDI diesel engine was available in Passats sold in Canada and the U.S. in 2004-05, but no diesel was offered again until the all new made-in-America Passat was introduced in 2011. Because of their premium prices when new, these are not the most economical used car buys. The fifth generation B5 Passats were troublesome, especially as they aged, but VW seems to have improved reliability for the B6 version, especially from 2008 on. Consumer Reports rates their reliability as average, but remember that Volkswagen parts are expensive.

OVERALL

The B6 was the first Passat not to share a platform with Audi, being based on a modified Golf. The engine was also mounted transversely, not longitudinally as on previous versions. This required a switch to the Haldex multi-plate clutch from the Torsen centre differential, which meant the car normally operated in FWD but could split torque 50/50 between front and rear wheels when needed. The low volume Passat CC could have high-tech options not found on other Passats such as a lane departure warning system, intelligent cruise control and adaptive suspension.
