HISTORY

The Mercedes-Benz M-Class is a midsize sport utility vehicle first introduced in 1997. The third generation was the first to use unibody construction, rather than body on frame. It made its debut in 2005 as a 2006 model, and was named Best New Sport Utility Vehicle by the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC). It received a facelift in 2009 when a new ML450 was added to the line-up. Many different engines were available but all are mated to the 7G-tronic seven-speed automatic transmission. M-Class vehicles sold in Canada and the U.S. are assembled in Tuscaloosa, Alabama.

THE GOOD STUFF

There are lots of versions to from which to choose - gasoline, diesel and hybrid. The most powerful is the 5.2-litre V8 found in the ML63 AMG, which makes 510 hp and can power the vehicle from 0-100 km/h in 4.8 seconds. The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration gave the third generation M-Class five stars in both front and side impact testing. The 2009 ML320 Bluetec was named AJAC’s Best New SUV/CUV. Mercedes’ excellent 4Matic permanent all-wheel drive is standard. Towing capacity for the M-Class is a decent 3,265 kg. With Mercedes’ 4-year/80,000 km bumper-to-bumper coverage, some late model, low mileage vehicles may have warranty remaining.

HEADS UP!

To control emissions, the Bluetec diesels use a urea-based solution called AdBlue, which is metered out from a tank (located under the cargo floor) that must be re-filled every 20,000 km. The 6.2-litre V8 is a real gas guzzler, rated by Environment Canada at 20.4 L/100km city and 14.0 highway. All M-Class gasoline engines require more expensive premium fuel. Consumer Guide gives the M-Class an above average rating for reliability, but 2006-07 models seems to have had more than their share of trouble spots, including electrical, transmission, suspension and steering. Later models seemed to be better sorted out. Some 2006-08 models were recalled to correct problems with the power steering system’s hydraulic assist and some 2009 versions were recalled to correct faulty taillights.

OVERALL

Now that the third generation M Class vehicles are consigned to the used car lot, they are much more affordable for ordinary families than when they were found in the new car showroom, where prices could approach $100,000. Some models will have advanced technological features such as air suspension, headlamps that automatically dim and active curve illumination. A hybrid version of the ML450 was launched in Canada and the U.S. in 2009. All M-Class models are capable off-road performers. A redesigned M-Class with edgier styling was launched in 2011 as a 2012 model.
