Shark; Hyundai's first sporty car

HISTORY

The Tiburon (Spanish for shark) was Hyundai’s first sporty car and was introduced in 1998. Equipped only with a four-cylinder engine borrowed from the Elantra sedan, performance wasn’t on par with its sporty styling. That was rectified when the second generation of the compact coupe made its debut for model year 2003 and received an optional V6 that also was used in Santa Fe and Sonata. The second edition Tiburon got a couple of mild facelifts in 2005 and 2007. Base models were either Tiburon or Tiburon SE. A five-speed manual was standard on all models and a six-speed stick was available in the V6-powered GT. Tiburon Tuscani became the top model in 2004 and had a base MSRP of $28,795. A four-speed automatic with manual shift gate was optional with either engine.

THE GOOD STUFF

Top end Tuscani models had a lot of standard features including power sunroof, automatic climate control, heated front seats, cruise control, power windows/doors/mirrors and traction control. Brakes were discs on all four wheels, with ABS. An electronic stability program became available in 2007. Although the rear seat was tight, it did fold forward giving Tiburon excellent cargo capacity. Access was through a manually operated rear hatch. Even with the back seats upright, trunk space was a generous 419 litres.

HEADS UP!

Estimated fuel economy for V6-powered cars was not great - 12.0 L/100km city and 8.3 highway, with either the five-speed manual or four-speed automatic, and 12.9 L/100km city for the six-speed. Although nominally a four-place car, the rear seats are not suitable for adults. Even kids may have difficulty getting in and out. A 2007 Tiburon was tested by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration in the U.S. and in a frontal offset crash got five stars for driver and four stars for front passenger. In the side impact crash Tiburon got four stars. Side curtain airbags were not available in Canada until 2007. Consumer Guide says 2003-08 Tiburon reliability is worse than average and lists transmissions, sunroofs and oil leaks as common trouble spots.

OVERALL

Even with the bigger engine, Tiburon is far from a performance car. But it looks good - and got better looking with each facelift. As Autonet.ca’s Daniel Barron wrote in a 2006 road test, “Tiburon seems to be more of a daily commuter vehicle than a sleek, affordable little coupe. There’s … just not enough sports car here.” Because of relatively low prices and insurance rates compared to other used sporty cars, these have been favourites with younger drivers who tend to push them to the limit, so shop carefully. Never a huge seller for Hyundai, good used examples may prove hard to find.
